"One day, while I was composing my concerto, ‘Aspiration’ came into my mind as an inevitable title.” Now it identifies a double CD package including four pieces for solo violin, performed by peerless violinist Irvine Arditti: Shifting/Drifting for violin and real-time algorithmic transformation, imagE/violin, imAge/violin, and Kokoro. The chamber concerto Aspiration is also included in the set. In Shifting/ Drifting computer algorithms manipulate (interactively during performance) „seeds“ extracted from the soloist´s materials. The earliest imAgE/ pair of this series was composed for cellist Alexis Descharmes. imagE/violin 2015 and imAge/violin 2015 are the most recent pair. While composing them, Reynolds worked closely together with his friend, Irvine, as had been the case, earlier, with Kokoro. Kokoro was inspired by reading D. Suzuki´s “Zen and Japanese Culture”. In Aspiration, Arditti´s playing is superimposed and interwoven with the chamber orchestra; figurative outbursts serve to constantly bring a listener´s attention back to his central role, whatever else is happening.
